Spiritual Direction

“Maybe that is the difference between pastoral counselors and spiritual directors.
We go to counselors when we want help getting out of caves.
We go to directors when we are ready to be led farther in.”

-Barbara Brown Taylor, Learning to Walk in the Dark

Spiritual Direction too easily sounds like mentoring, counseling, or coaching, but it is not quite any of those things.  Whatever you bring to direction, you will not find answers or advice.  Instead you will find someone who has prayed for you, is listening to your story with full attention and without judgement, and helps you to notice things about yourself and your life.

Whatever you may be experiencing in your life, in the context of your current situation: Who is God to you?  Who are you to God?

Spiritual Direction is a time you set aside to pay attention to God and to your own spirit.  Your Spiritual Director can sit with you wherever you find yourself and help you recognize stages of spiritual formation and truths about God’s love for you that are hard to see without the help of a compassionate observer.

Spiritual Direction has been an ongoing process in my own life, but it can also be particularly helpful during seasons of:

  • Decision Making

  • Life Transition

  • Doubt and Questioning

  • Grief and Loss

  • Reconciliation and healing

I have my own Spiritual Direction practice that specializes in women and women’s issues.  If you would like more information, you can reach out to me using my contact form.

If Spiritual Direction is new to you and you are curious to learn more, I’d recommend exploring a fantastic overview at Grafted Life and also listening to a personal experience someone shared recently at Christianity Today.

Liz Ditty is a Spiritual Director and a member of Spiritual Directors InternationalEvangelical Spiritual Directors Association, and Sustainable Faith. She completed her two year training in Spiritual Direction through Sustainable Faith in 2016
